Please be cautious on slippery sidewalks and roads in winter!

2023-12-13

The meteorological forecasts indicate that thaw is expected in Riga during the weekends and the beginning of next week, leading to significant melting of snow and ice. Wet surfaces may freeze due to temperature fluctuations, making sidewalks very slippery. Additionally, there is a possibility of snow falling from roofs and the formation of icicles.

Be cautious when walking near buildings!

The company “Rīgas namu pārvaldnieks” (RNP) continues intensive roof cleaning operations from icicles and snow in the multi-apartment residential buildings under its management. Residents are urged to observe safety precautions and consider that, for safety reasons, it is prohibited to move through the restricted area.

Pay attention when moving on sidewalks!

The maintenance workers of RNP are prepared for the situation by treating sidewalks with an anti-slip material: a sand-salt mixture where the salt content does not exceed 20%. However, in such weather conditions, spreading anti-slip materials on sidewalks is less effective, and with continued precipitation, sidewalks may freeze again. Therefore, we urge you to be cautious!

When moving on sidewalks, we recommend pedestrians to:

  • Choose appropriate footwear – select shoes with warm lining to provide warmth even in low temperatures, and opt for shoes with a treaded sole to reduce slipping while walking.
  • Avoid objects that may have a large amount of snowfall – for example, snow accumulates faster on house roofs and can slide off, potentially falling on pedestrians.
  • Pay attention to vehicles – when walking on the street or crossing it, always be mindful that extra caution is needed during the winter season. Vehicles on slippery roads may lose control or may not be able to brake quickly, so always look both ways when crossing to ensure the driver sees you.
  • Take smaller steps – when walking on the street, road, or sidewalk, as well as when getting off a vehicle, take smaller steps to reduce the risk of slipping. With each step, firmly place your foot on the ground, and for additional safety, hold onto something, such as the edges.
  • Maintain balance – increase stability by slightly turning your feet outward and keeping your body weight directly above your feet.
  • Keep hands free – if you keep your hands in your pockets, it reduces your balance, and you may not be able to quickly use them to break a fall if you slip. Also, stretching your arms to the sides can significantly improve balance. Be sure to wear gloves so that you don’t have to keep your hands in your pockets.
  • If available, use walking aids or attachable, non-slip shoe accessories – do not hesitate to use them when walking on slippery sidewalks.
  • In case of slipping – try to avoid landing on the tailbone, which can be particularly painful and slow to heal.

Driving in winter requires extra attention!

The presence of winter poses additional challenges for all of us on the roads. It is essential not only to be exceptionally cautious when navigating through roadways but also advisable to reduce speed, especially near residential areas, to avoid unpleasant situations. If the vehicle in front brakes suddenly or a pedestrian emerges onto the road, your reaction can be crucial.

We urge drivers to:

  • Reduce speed, especially when driving through residential courtyards and along residential buildings, at pedestrian crossings, and other areas where pedestrians may cross the road, as the braking distance on snowy or icy roads increases at least twice;
  • Maintain a safe distance between other vehicles – snow and ice affect braking, and in winter, it is considerably longer than in summer;
  • Focus on traffic and what’s happening around you – most accidents occur due to inattention, such as using a phone while driving, listening to loud music, etc. Taking care of your safety and the safety of others, concentrate on traffic and what’s happening around you!

We encourage everyone to take care of seniors during this time, including family members, neighbors, and fellow citizens. This can involve tasks such as bringing groceries from the store or assisting with navigating slippery sidewalks and roads. Additionally, please share information on safe mobility tips.

Be attentive and prioritize health and well-being!
