As the active construction season comes to an end and to improve safety within the water supply networks, preventive disinfection (chlorination) of Riga’s water supply system is scheduled from October 27 to October 30. The process will begin simultaneously at all water pumping stations, allowing the disinfectant to spread evenly throughout the city’s water supply network.
Although the disinfection of water pipelines poses no health risks, it is recommended to use boiled water for consumption during the process and for 24 hours afterward — that is, from October 27 to October 31. For household purposes, water can be safely used without boiling. Water intended for pets, birds, decorative fish, and similar should be allowed to stand before use; the same applies when watering houseplants.
During the disinfection period, tap water may have an unpleasant odor and a slight chlorine taste; however, the amount of chlorine used for disinfection is not harmful or dangerous to health. Specialists from “Rīgas ūdens” will continuously monitor the situation, carefully tracking the chlorine concentration in the water.
Preventive disinfection of water supply networks is recommended twice a year, but no less than once every two years. According to both our experts and those of the World Health Organization, this is a priority and necessary drinking water treatment procedure to ensure consistently high water quality.
