2022-08-04

Renovation and repair of the façades of the residential building at Mūrnieku iela 14 have commenced after receiving the co-financing from the Riga City Municipality.

On 7 February 2022, the owners of the apartments at Mūrnieku iela 14, Riga, made a joint decision on participation of the building at Mūrnieku iela 14, Riga, in the tender “Riga City Municipality Co-financing for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in 2022” and authorised SIA “Rīgas namu pārvaldnieks” (RNP) to draw up and submit documents on behalf of the owners, in accordance with the tender rules.

Built 1902, this building located on the corner of the streets Mūrnieku iela and Lienes iela is distinctive for its bulletin board on the corner façade, decorative window elements and eaves, as well as its wooden façade decoration.

The building at Mūrnieku iela 14 is one of the few 19th-century wooden workers’ buildings that have been preserved on this street. They are mostly two-floor buildings. The street has a total of 11 buildings, 8 of which are wooden houses.

The plot is located at Mūrnieku iela 14 (group 037; plot 0035) and covers a total land area of 692 sqm. Main purpose of the building – 1122 (buildings with three or more apartments).

The building forms part of the urban monument of national significance – the Historical Centre of Riga (State protection No. 7442), which is governed by the Law on Protection of Cultural Monuments and other laws and regulations related to the protection of the historic centre of Riga. The project regarding the certification card for the simplified façade renovation seeks to improve the visual appearance of the building by carrying out the following works:

  • Painting of the façade
  • Repair and replacement of damaged façade boards; installation of new boards in areas where they are currently missing
  • Restoration of decorative elements of the façade and painting under the supervision of a certified restorer
  • Painting of the windowsills
  • Restoration and painting of windows and doors
  • Painting of drip strips over cornices and head moldings
  • Painting and, if necessary, replacement of the cornice drip strip
  • Replacement of gutters and drains, if damaged; painting of the remaining gutters and drains; design the gutter of the courtyard façade so that the rainwater is drained over the pavement into the green area
  • Renovation and painting of the base; dismantling of insulation and plaster, repair of bricks, restoration of the finishing with lime mortar
  • Replacement of tin covers of light wells with new ones; if necessary, restoration of the undercover masonry of the light well
  • Installation of a new decorative element above the window on the courtyard façade

The façade restoration project seeks to fully preserve the original substances of the façade of the building at Mūrnieku iela 14, Riga.

The previous paintwork was analysed based on a photograph taken in 2009, which shows the previous paintwork of the building. This may not be the original, historic colour of the façade, as according to residents, the building has been repainted several times.

The original façade boards were completely dismantled during the previous façade renovation, so it is not possible to analyse the historic boards to determine their historic colour. There are also no older photographs of the building, which would allow to ascertain the older shade of the façade.

The colour of the façade boards was determined visually by comparing it with the NCS system catalogue and a photograph taken in 2009. The changes due to light, environmental factors, and upper layers were not taken into account when determining the tone. The shade of the façade chosen to be the closest match to the previous one is only informative.

Considering the previous shade of the façade, a new colour scheme was created for the simplified renovation of the façade. The façade preserves the shade from the previous colour range. To highlight the decorative elements, they are to take a light grey shade.

The decorative elements are to be highlighted considering the current adjacent restored façade which, just like the planed façade of the building at Mūrnieku iela 14, is dominated by the dark façade shade with highlighted decorative elements.

The certification card for the simplified renovation of the façade of the residential building at Mūrnieku iela 14 was developed based on the assignment by authors of the construction conception – the apartment owners at Mūrnieku iela 14 and in accordance with the current Construction Law and Latvian Building Standards.
