Restoration and renovation of the façades of the residential building at Tallinas iela 36 have commenced

2022-06-21

On 28 January 2022, the owners of the apartments at Tallinas iela 36 and 36A, Riga, made a joint decision on participation of the building at Tallinas iela 36, Riga, in the tender “Riga City Municipality Co-financing for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in 2022” and authorised SIA “Rīgas namu pārvaldnieks” to draw up and submit documents on behalf of the owners, in accordance with the tender rules.

The building at Tallinas iela 36, Riga, was built in 1900 and designed by architect Heinrich Devendrus. The building is not included in the list of State-protected architectural monuments, but it is located in the territory of the urban monument of national significance “Historical Centre of Riga” (State protection No. 7442) and of the UNESCO World Heritage Site No. 852 “Historical Centre of Riga”. The building is a four-floor stone tenant-occupied house with shops on the ground floor. It stands parallel to Tallinas iela. The building has largely retained its original scale and façade architecture. Its architecture follows the eclectic tradition. The street façade has a symmetrical composition. The main entrance is located on the central axis. The two ends of the façade are emphasised by slightly projecting avant-corps. The ground floor is covered with textured plaster divided into heavy blocks. The plaster on upper floors is plain and divided into ribbon-shaped blocks. Embossed plaster is also used in the corners of the avant-corps and in the head molding of the 3rd floor windows. The raised roof eaves are supported by brackets. Narrow intermediate rails separate the floors. The windows on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th floors have straight lintels, while those on the 2nd floor have semi-circular shape. The windows of the 2nd and 3rd floors have embossed head moldings. The façade is decorated with rhythmically arranged cement mould decorations with mask, wreath, and festoon motifs. On the 2nd floor above the door, there was most probably a balcony.  The opening was transformed into a window (it is not known when it was built, none of the historical plans show it). The passage envisaged in the designed developed in 1900 has not been constructed. There used to be shops on the ground floor. The plasterwork has been repaired as the openings have been rebuilt several times.

The façade restoration project seeks to fully preserve the original substances of the façade of the building at Tallinas iela 36, Riga.
